SUMMARY
The Engineering Manager will lead a half-dozen member engineering department responsible for driving projects to implement new equipment or modify existing equipment for a pilot-scale bioprocess production facility; and for ensuring that the use, calibration, and preventive maintenance needs of pilot plant facilities and equipment are met. Responsibilities include creating/reviewing design specifications, preparing/reviewing bid packages, managing detailed design review, managing vendor interactions; and testing, implementing, and operating equipment in the pilot facility. These projects may be new facilities and/or retrofit of existing. In addition, the candidate will develop PFD, P&ID, equipment specifications, and will evaluate mass balance of processes. The candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance of new equipment/systems with design requirements, comprehensively documented in written technical reports.
As the Engineering Manager, candidate must have thorough knowledge in particle separation and recovery processes, CIP, environmental chemistry; technical background in design, testing and application of water treatment technologies and experience with seawater systems is a plus. Candidate will have a high level of skill in project management; demonstrated capability in plant operation, monitoring and maintenance; and knowledge of principles of quality assurance and statistical process control. Candidate will also ensure implementation of good engineering practices on all design activities, create/review and approve design documents, and ensure correct process design. Support all projects through construction, start-up, and validation.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinate cross-functional groups to drive technical projects.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements, reduced costs, and increased capacity.
- Develop and approve design documents and drawings.
- Develop and approve process descriptions.
- Lead cross-functional groups in the management of change process relating to all additions and modifications to pilot plant equipment.
- Develop, approve and execute pre-safety startup review and commissioning processes.
- Review and approve validation protocols.
- Manage personnel to ensure use, calibration, and preventive maintenance needs are met for the pilot facility.
- Develop and modify SOPs for operation of all pilot scale bioprocess manufacturing equipment, and ensure operator training accordingly
- Contribute to or lead complex investigations for root causes and corrective actions; track and implement corrective actions.
- Provide technical training to and adherence to HSSE practices in all appropriate operations.
Requirements
EDUCATION
BS or MS in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering or Bioprocess Engineering or a related field from an accredited university
EXPERIENCE
- 10+ years experience; process development and pilot scale operating experience desired.
- Demonstrated project management skills at a high level
- Organizational and management skills to coordinate multi-disciplinary projects
Ability to speak, present data, and defend approaches in front of audiences and inspectors.
- Ability to comprehend technical information related to equipment, processes, and regulatory expectations.
- Proficiency with standard office software applications, including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Project, MS Power Point. Experience and proficiency with other applications (such as MS Access a plus).
- Experience with AutoCAD and related databases
- Experience in managing change procedures
- Experience in report writing required, with demonstrated organizational, spelling, and grammatical skills
